The Vandals fell behind early and would never lead as they were stunned on road Friday night, losing to the Staunton Bulldogs 41 to 33.
The Bulldogs won the coin toss and elected to take the opening kick off and punched in a Touchdown just 2:08 into the game to take a 6 to 0 lead. The Vandals then took the ball inside the Staunton 10 on their first possession of the game. But, the Vandals lost a fumble and came up empty on the possession. Staunton then took the ball and made it 13 to 0 with 1:18 remaining in the 1st quarter. The Vandals got on the board early in the 2nd quarter when Qwentyn Stombaugh connected with Ayden Carroll on a 6 yard TD pass to get the game to 13 to 7. But, Staunton would answer with their own Touchdown pass at 2:03 remaining in the 2nd quarter to get the lead to 21 to 7. The Vandals would get back on the board with 15 second remaining until halftime when Stombaugh connected with Lucas Bowers on an 18 yard TD pass as the Vandals trailed 21 to 13 at halftime.
The Vandals got the ball coming out in the 2nd half and would score on a 5 yard TD run by Brody Matthews. The Vandals would then get a 2 point conversion to tie the game at 21. Staunton would then regain the lead with a TD late in the 3rd quarter to make it 28 to 21. The Vandals then got a 4 yard TD run from Stombaugh, but the kick failed meaning the Vandals trailed 28 to 27 with 9:23 left in the game. Staunton would then score less than 90 seconds later on the clock to take a 34 to 27 lead. Then, 1:35 later on the clock (6:21 remaining in the game) Stombaugh would connect with Cole Yarbrough for a TD from 16 yards out. The Vandals had a chance to take the lead, but their 2 point conversion failed and the Vandals trailed 34 to 33. Staunton would then tack on another score with 3:38 remaining to get their lead to 41 to 33. The Vandals got the ball back but would eventually lose the ball on a fumble with less than 30 second left, allowing Staunton to close it out. In total, the Vandals would lose 3 fumbles on the night and Staunton would have no turnovers in the game.
Staunton got a tremendous performance from their Quarterback, Paxton Brown, who is coming off an injury early in the season, threw 5 TD passes on the night. The win by Staunton also ended the Vandals winning streak against Staunton. The Vandals had won 12 in a row dating back to 2014 and up until last night.
Stuanton is now 3-4 on the season. The Vandals are 5-2. The Vandals will host North Mac this coming Friday for Senior Night.
