South Central’s Colton Tockstein and Aiden Hoover held Brownstown-St. Elmo to just two hits as the Cougars shut out the Bombers 12-0 on Tuesday as the two wrapped up National Trail Conference regular season play. South Central took advantage of some early BSE pitching struggles and drew four walks in the first inning and scored on a wild pitch, a fielder’s choice and a sacrifice fly to lead 3-0 midway through the first inning. BSE was able to put a pair if runners on via walks in the bottom half of the inning but was held scoreless after a double play ended the inning. The Cougars and Bombers held each other scoreless for the next three innings before Tockstein hit a single to left field and drove in a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning to extend the South Central lead to 5-0. That lead was pushed out even further in the top of the sixth inning as Sebastian Kruger scored on a wild pitch, Eli Hiestand scored on a passed ball and Hoover grounded out to score Luke Shumate as the Cougars led 8-0. BSE went three up, three down in the bottom of the sixth inning bringing South Central back to the plate in the top of the seventh where they put together a two out rally with Hiestand reaching base on an error which allowed Garrett Shumate to score and in the next at bat, Jordan Smith doubled to score Kruger for a 10-0 Cougars lead. That rally kept going with an RBI single from Luke Shumate and an RBI single from Hoover to bring in two more runs and cap off the scoring at 12-0. In the bottom of the seventh, the Bombers started to get going with two outs with a walk drawn by Calvin Voelker and a single by Jayce Gillespie, but a ground out ended the effort and South Central closed out the 12-0 win over BSE. South Central wraps up regular season NTC play at 4-4 and moves to 10-10 overall on the season. BSE wraps up NTC play at 1-7 and moves to 9-10 overall. The two teams will now wait for the bracket to be released for the NTC Tournament to find out their next games.
