The South Central Cougars scored 5 runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to help secure an 8-1 victory over the Cowden-Herrick/Beecher City Bobcats in a National Trail Conference matchup on Friday night. Aiden Hoover got the Cougars on the board with a sacrifice fly to score Luke Shumate, giving South Central a 1-0 lead. That score held until the bottom of the third inning when Sebastian Kruger singled to score Aiden Strobel, extending the Cougars lead to 2-0. Harlan McConkey put the Bobcats on the board with an RBI single in the top of the fourth inning, cutting the deficit to 2-1. South Central added on in the bottom of the fourth inning when Luke Shumate scored on a wild pitch, followed by an RBI double from Hoover, pushing the lead to 4-1. Garrett Shumate reached on a bunt single, allowing Hoover to score, before a pair of errors allowed two more runs to score, capping off the 4-run frame for South Central and making the score 7-1. The Cougars got an insurance run in the bottom of the fifth when a passed ball allowed courtesy runner Ben Skibinski to score, pushing the lead to 8-1. Colton Tockstein and Ryker Dodson would combine to retire six of the last seven Bobcats hitters, securing the 8-1 victory. South Central is now 4-0 on the season, and 1-0 in the NTC. The Cougars will be on the road on Tuesday for an NTC matchup with St. Anthony. CHBC is now 0-3 on the season and 0-2 in the NTC. The Bobcats will be back home on Saturday to take on St. Anthony.
