South Central baseball is now 2-0 to start the season after getting a walk-off win on a sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the 8th inning to beat Woodlawn 2-1 on Saturday. The Cougars were first to get on the scoreboard when Colton Tockstein had an RBI groundout to score Ryker Dodson with one out in the bottom of the first inning and put South Central on top 1-0. Woodlawn was able to get that run back, tying the game up at 1-1 in the top of the second inning. South Central put the first two batters aboard in the bottom of the inning but was unable to bring anyone in as the Cardinals got out of the big jam. The Cougars again had two runners aboard at first and third with just one out in the bottom of the third inning but again were held scoreless as the game stayed tied up at 1-1. South Central continued to get one or two men on base each inning but continued to have trouble getting them across the plate while holding Woodlawn scoreless through the final four innings of regulation as well to send the game to extra innings. The Cardinals put two on in the top of the eighth but pitcher Garret Shumate got the Cougars out of the inning with a pair of strikeouts. The Cougars leadoff batter, Tockstein, was hit by a pitch to get on base before being lifted for pinch runner Ben Skibinski. A line drive single by Sebastian Kruger put Skibinksi at third and with runners at the corners, Aiden Strobel’s sacrifice to the pitcher brought Skibinski in to score and give South Central the 2-1 win. The Cougars start the season 2-0 and will be back in action at home on Wednesday when they host Webber.
