Vandals get rolling in the 2nd half, defeat Carlinville in Season Opener

The Vandals were able to get the offense rolling in the second and the defense was able to clamp down on Carlinville’s run offense as the Vandals come away with a 48 to 20 win in their season opener on Friday night at Mark Greer Field.

The game started off well for the Vandals, as they stopped Carlinville on a quick 3 and out and then scored shortly after on a Qwentyn Stombaugh 13 yard run to make it 6 to 0.  But, Carlinville would get their run offense going on their second possession, grinding out a nearly 12 minute drive which ended with a Cavalier TD and successful extra point to give them a 7 to 6 lead.  The Vandals would then quickly score to retake the lead at 13 to 7.  And, after a Carlinville turnover, the Vandals scored again to get the lead to 19 to 7 with 2:02 to go until halftime.  But, Carlinville would use a long completion and a pass interference penalty against the Vandals to help them reach the end zone again and cut the Vandals lead to 19 to 14.  And, that’s where the game was at halftime.

In the second half, the Vandals would score 1:20 into the 3rd quarter on a 50 yard TD pass from Stombaugh to Cole Yarbrough to get the lead to 27 to 14.  On their next possession, the Vandals were facing a 4th and 26 from the Carlinville 28 when Stombaugh connected with Paddy McDowell for a now 34 to 14 lead for the Vandals.  Carlinville would score one more time late in the 3rd quarter but the Vandals tagged on two more scores in the 4th quarter to end up with the 48 to 20 win.

For the Vandals, they are now 1-0 on the season.  They will head on the road for the first time this season next Friday night as they will travel to Hillsboro to take on the Hiltoppers.
