Our Pro Wire Athletes of the Week for the week of August 22 are Vandalia football senior quarterback Qwentyn Stombaugh, the Vandalia Jr. High Baseball team and the Vandalia Jr. High Softball team.

VCHS quarterback Qwentyn Stombaugh ran for three touchdowns, threw for three more and also connected a pass for a 2-point conversion as the Vandals beat the Carlinville Cavaliers 48-20 to open the football season on Friday night. Stombaugh ran the ball 12 times for 125 yards and was 11 for 19 passing for 184 yards as he finished with a total of 309 offensive yards for the night.

The VJHS baseball team is now 6-0 on the season. They have shutout four of their six opponents and have also outscored their opponents 87-8 through the first two weeks of the season as all but one win has been by 10 or more runs. The Vandals will look to keep their huge start to the season going next week as they take on Salem Franklin Park at home on Wednesday before playing at Mt. Olive/Litchfield on Friday.

The VJHS softball team is now 4-2 on the season and went 3-1 this week playing four games in five days. The Lady Vandals beat Breese 5-4, beat St. Elmo-Brownstown 8-4 and got a comeback win over Carlyle for their three wins this week while their one loss came on Friday night to a tough Greenville team, 4-0. Vandalia was no hit but Greenville was only able to get one hit off of the Vandalia pitching in the pitchers duel.
