High School Sports Jump Into Full Swing Today

The high school sports year gets fully underway today across the state with the first official practices being held for all fall sports with the exception of football that got underway this last Wednesday. Volleyball, golf, cross country, soccer and girls tennis all hold their first practices today to officially start the season. Golf matches for Vandalia, Altamont and Ramsey can begin as early as Thursday but the Vandals will be the only one starting on the first day as they compete in the Battle at Rend Lake and Ramsey and Altamont will play their first matches on August 15 and 17. While tennis matches for Vandalia girls can also begin Thursday, they will wait until August 20 to play in their first match on the road before holding their home opener on August 24 when they compete for the first time on their new courts. Soccer, volleyball and cross country can all begin their matches and meets on August 24 after a couple weeks of practice.

As for fall baseball, the season is not governed by the IHSA and therefore does not have a set calendar to go by for its fall start date but many area teams are set to start their practices today. BSE, Ramsey, CHBC and South Central will all begin their games the middle of next week while Altamont will get their games underway on August 25.
