The Vandalia Vandals Jr. High baseball team used a big 3-run third inning to claim their second straight regional championship, defeating the Highland Bulldogs 11-2 on Wednesday. The Bulldogs scored a pair of runs in the top of the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead. The Vandals responded with a Jack Doehring sacrifice fly and a wild pitch, each scoring a run, tying the game at 2. The Vandals took the lead in the bottom of the second inning, when Bentley Real and Jaxson Washburn scored on a pair of errors, giving the Vandals a 4-2 lead. An RBI single from Brooks Bost capped off a 3-run inning for Vandalia, extending their lead to 5-2. A pair of wild pitches in the bottom of the third inning extended the Vandals lead to 7-2, before an RBI single from Bost and Kayden Tompkins in the fourth inning pushed the lead to 9-2. The Vandals got a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Luke Doehring and an RBI groundout from Jase Blankenship, making the score 11-2, and Bost shut down the Bulldogs in the top of the seventh, securing the 11-2 win for Vandalia. The Vandals are now 17-1-1 on the season and have advanced to the Sectional G championship, where they will take on Mt. Zion at 11 AM on Saturday at Mt. Zion.
