VJHS Historic Softball Season Comes to an End in Sectional Championship Loss to Gillespie


The Vandalia Lady Vandals Jr. High softball team saw their historic season come to an end on Tuesday night, falling to the Gillespie Lady Indians 4-3 in the Sectional Championship. The Lady Indians scored first in the top of the first inning on an RBI groundout, taking a 1-0 lead. The Lady Vandals responded when Summer Carpenter grounded into a fielder’s choice, allowing Hannah Stombaugh to score, tying the game at 1. That score held until the top of the third inning when Gillespie scored on a passed ball, taking a 2-1 lead. Vandalia tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning when Brenley Clay hit a sacrifice fly, allowing Brooklyn Burnam to score, making the score 2-2. The Lady Indians scored a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning, taking a 4-2 lead. The Lady Vandals chipped away at the deficit in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI groundout from Clay, making the score 4-3. Vandalia was unable to draw closer, falling to the Lady Indians 4-3. The Lady Vandals end their season with a record of 11-6
