The Vandalia Lady Vandals volleyball team got their season off on the right note on Tuesday night, coming away with a two-set win over the Mulberry Grove Lady Aces 25-13, 30-28. The Lady Vandals jumped out to an early 11-5 lead in the first set, causing the Lady Aces to call a timeout. Vandalia kept their foot on the gas out of the timeout, going on an 11-7 run to extend their lead to 22-12 before ending the set on a 3-1 run to secure the 25-13 set win. In the second set, the Lady Aces jumped out to an 8-3 lead, forcing the Lady Vandals to call a timeout. The two teams traded points, but Mulberry Grove remained ahead 16-11. Vandalia went on an impressive 13-3 run to take a 24-19 lead. The Lady Aces would not go away quietly, going on a 5-0 run, tying the set at 24. The two teams again traded points, with the set being tied at 28, but the Lady Vandals put the set and the match away with a 2-0 run to secure the 30-28 win. The Lady Vandals open the season at 1-0. Vandalia will be on the road on Thursday when they take on St. Elmo/Brownstown. Mulberry Grove is 0-1 to start the season and will play their first Egyptian Illini Conference match of the season when they play at Ramsey on Friday.
