BSE Opens Season With Shutout Win Over Christ Our Rock

Jayce and Zayden Gillespie joined forces to toss a 2-hit shutout and Logan Lach had a strong day at the plate as Brownstown-St. Elmo beat Christ Our Rock Lutheran 8-0 at home on Tuesday. The Bombers were able to put just one baserunner on in the first two innings but took advantage of errors by the Silver Stallions to get things moving in the bottom of the third inning. Gavin Schnarre led the inning off and reached base on an overthrow by the Christ Our Rock shortstop and then came around to score when Fred Towler reached base on an error. Calvin Voelker walked to put runners at first and second before J. Gillespie grounded into a fielder’s choice that caught Towler out advancing to third before a crazy sequence of errors allowed Voelker to come all the way around to score for a 2-0 BSE lead. J. Gillespie scored on a ground out by Lach and Z. Gillespie tripled and then scored on a passed ball to put the Bombers up 4-0. An inning later, BSE tacked on another run for a 5-0 lead after Schnarre drew a leadoff walk and then scored when Towler again reached on a Christ Our Rock error. The Bombers got back-to-back hits to start the bottom of the fifth with a single from Lach and a double by Z. Gillespie with a sac fly from Nolan Wilhour scoring Lach to push the BSE lead to 6-0. A pair of strikeouts ended the inning though and stopped what looked like building offensive momentum for the Bombers. BSE capped off their scoring in the sixth inning as Voelker scored on an error by Christ Our Rock and J. Gillespie was driven in on an RBI single from Lach as the Bombers lead grew to 8-0. Lach finished the game 2-3 with 2 RBI while J. Gillespie tossed five innings without allowing a hit or a walk and striking out 12 before Z. Gillespie pitched the final two innings giving up no runs on two hits and striking out five. With the win, the Bombers kick off their season at 1-0 and will play their first road game on Thursday at Mulberry Grove.
