The Midwest Dirtbags 15U baseball team went 5-0 over the weekend coming away Champions of the GMB Panama Hacks Classic in O’Fallon in their first tournament of the Summer. The team made up of high school players from Altamont, Brownstown, South Central, Stew-Stras, Neoga and Patoka competed in the 16-team tournament beginning with two games of pool play on Saturday where they got a 4-0 win over Redbirds National 15U 4-0 and beat the RiverBats 6-5 after coming back from an early 4-0 deficit. With their 2-0 finish in pool play, the Dirtbags were the #3 seed in the Gold Championship Bracket and opened bracket play with a big 9-1 win over #6 seed Bombers Elite to advance to the semifinals. The Dirtbags trailed 2-1 to start the 6th inning but put three runs on the scoreboard to get the comeback win, 4-2, over #2 seed GC Tribe-Fowler and earn their spot in the Championship game. Facing the #1 seed SI Wildcats 15U, the Dirtbags jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning and were answered with 5 runs from the Wildcats in the bottom of the inning to hold just a one run lead 6-5. After edging their lead out to 7-5 after the second inning, the Dirtbags found themselves tied up 7-7 after the fourth inning and tied again 8-8 after the fifth inning. But a late offensive explosion with 4 runs crossing the plate put the Dirtbags up 12-8 midway through the 7th inning and then they held the Tribe scoreless to close out the win and claim the Championship. The Dirtbags are 5-0 on the summer and will be back in action this Wednesday in Breese taking on the SI Wildcats at 6:00pm.
