Vandalia baseball was held to just three singles as they struggled to generate offense in a 10-0 loss to St. Anthony in the semifinals of their own Vandalia 2A Regional on Wednesday afternoon. The Vandals got a one out single from Jack Lewis in the top of the first inning but he was stranded on base to end the half inning. St. Anthony opened scoring in the game and used back to back doubles to take a 3-0 lead by the end of the first inning. After a scoreless second inning, the Vandals got another baserunner in the top of the third inning with Qwentyn Stombaugh reaching on a single to third base and then advanced to second base on an error. After a sacrifice from Owen Halford moved Stombaugh to third, a foul pop out and a fly out ended the half inning with the Vandals still trailing 3-0. Back to back home runs by the Bulldogs to start the bottom of the third inning quickly pushed the St. Anthony lead to 5-0 with one more run tacked on before the end of the inning to make it a 6-0 deficit for the Vandals. Andrew Casey led off the top of the fourth inning with a base hit for Vandalia but a double play and a pop out stopped any chance to get some momentum going and the Vandals continued to trail 6-0. A scoreless fourth inning left the six-run St. Anthony lead in place but in the bottom of the fifth inning a series of three singles, a couple walks, a hit by pitch and a Vandalia error led to four more runs for St. Anthony as they pushed their lead to 10-0 over Vandalia which triggered the run rule and brought the game to a close. Vandalia ends their season at 14-19.
