Altamont senior thrower Brock Wendling, Vandalia senior sprinter Kohnor Depew, junior mid-distance runner Nic Jackson, junior hurdler Sam Bowers and the 4×200 relay team of Bowers, Depew, Paddy McDowell and Jayden Hubler-Rench will be in competition today in the Prelims if the IHSA 1A Boys State Track Meet at O’Brien Stadium at Eastern Illinois University. Wendling, Altamont’s lone qualifier this year, will be competing at his third straight State Meet and will be the first area athlete in action as he will compete in Flight 2 of the Shot Put at 11:00am. Vandalia’s Bowers returns to State for the second time and first time since his freshman year in 2024, and will be the first area runner on the blue oval as he competes in Heat 2 of 5 heats in the 110m Hurdles at 1:22pm. Depew is returning to State for the Vandals after getting on the podium twice last year in the 100m Dash and the 200m Dash will run both events today as he competes in Heat 3 of 5 heats of the 100 at 1:42pm and will run in Heat 1 of 4 heats in the 200m Dash at 3:43pm. Jackson competes at the State Meet for the first time today, racing in Heat 3 of three heats for the 800m Run at 2:02pm. The Vandalia 4×200 relay team of Bowers, Depew, Paddy McDowell and Jayden Hubler-Rench is the lone relay team for the are to make it to the State Meet and the foursome will compete in Heat 2 of 5 heats at 2:20pm. Those meeting the preliminary qualifying standards will advance to Saturday’s Finals.
As for the final area state qualifier, CHBC’s August Cosart, the lone qualifier for the Bobcats, will have to wait until Saturday to compete in the 3200m Run. Instead of running the event twice, IHSA holds the competition for the 3200m Run on Saturday only with the 44 competitors split between 3 sections running just once for time and a shot at the podium. Cosart will be in Section 3 of 3 at 12:10pm on Saturday afternoon.
