South Central Takes Late Lead, Beats CHBC in Regional Quarterfinal

South Central’s bottom of the order came through offensively late in the game while CHBC struggled with errors late as a pitcher’s duel between the two teams turned into a 5-1 win for the Cougars over the Bobcats in the quarterfinal game of the North Clay 1A Regional on Monday. Both teams were held scoreless in the first two innings as they combined to strand seven runners on base. The Bobcats broke through first in the top of the third inning though as Clive Schlanser singled to reach base and then advanced to second on a South Central error after getting into a rundown. Conner Vaughn then doubled to bring in Schlanser and give CHCB the 1-0 lead. The lead held until the bottom of the fifth inning when South Central got a leadoff single from Sebastian Kruger, Luke Shumate drew a one out walk and Hudson Moore drew a two out walk to load the bases. With two outs in the inning and a 3-2 count on the Cougars batter, CHBC checked the runner Moore at first base who got himself into a rundown allowing Kruger to head home from third base with Shumate moving up to third base and then coming around to score as well as Moore was able to safely get to second base and then advance to third as the Cougars took a 2-1 lead before the at bat ended with a ground out to end the inning. The Bobcats were unable to get anything going in the top of the sixth inning as the side was retired on a line out, a pop out and a ground out. South Central again got the leadoff runner aboard when Garrett Shumate walked. A bunt out and a strikeout gave the Cougars two outs in the inning before Kruger came through with a double to center field to drive in Shumate and extend the lead to 3-1. That started a rally as Isaac Guerrettaz singled to right field and went to second on a CHBC error which allowed Kruger to score and push the Cougars lead to 4-1 before Luke Shumate followed up with a line drive to right field to bring in Guerrettaz for a 5-1 South Central lead to end the sixth inning. Down to their last at bat, the Bobcats were unable to get anything going as a pair of strikeouts and a fly out ended the game with South Central getting the 5-1 win. CHBC ends their season with a record of 9-15. South Central moves to 9-21 on the season and advances on to the semifinals on Wednesday at 4:00pm when they play regional host and #1 seed North Clay in Louisville.
