South Central softball came back from 5-0 to tie the game in the fourth, but fell just short in a 7-6 loss to Pinckneyville at home on Wednesday. The Panthers opened the game’s scoring with a run in the first inning and then pushed four runs across the plate in the top of the second as South Central trailed 5-0 to start the bottom of the second inning. A one out single by Kinlee Thompson kickstarted the Cougar offense and a walk drawn by Maddie Peddicord had runners at the corners after a passed ball let Thompson advance to third. A 2-RBI single by Amelia Montes to centerfield scored both Thompson and Peddicord to cut the Pinckneyville lead down to 5-2. South Central stopped the Panthers in the top of the third inning and then put their first two batters on base via a walk and an error in the bottom of the inning. With runners at first and second, Emmie sacrificed to score Perci Reid and batter later, Lauren Johnson had an RBI groundout to score Annie Ruholl and pull the Lady Cougars within one, trailing just 5-4. South Central allowed one Panthers baserunner in the top of the fourth but stranded that runner aboard to keep it a one-run game. That one run then quickly got erased in the bottom of the fourth when Peddicord led the inning of with a solo home run to left field, tying the game at 5-5 where it stayed until the top of the sixth inning. Pinckneyville scored on an infield single and then a South Central error on the same play allowed a second run to come in and put Pinckneyville up 7-5. After not being able to get anything going outside of a leadoff single by Thompon in the sixth inning, South Central was able to hold the Panthers to the minimum batters in the seventh and give themselves a chance at a comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Reid drew a walk and a double by An. Ruholl allowed Reid to score from first and cut the Pinckneyville lead down to 7-6. However, Ruholl was caught trying to advance to third on the play giving South Central two outs in the inning. A lineout by the next batter ended the game and South Central came up just short in the tough 7-6 loss. The Lady Cougars are now 13-12 on the season and will play their fourth game in four days today when they play North Clay at home.
