The Vandalia Vandals used a pair of two-run home runs and a big 4-run seventh inning to come away with an 8-3 win over the Piasa Southwestern Birds in a South Central Conference matchup. The Vandals broke the scoreless tie in the top of the third inning on a Kohnor Depew 2-run home run to take a 2-0 lead. Vandalia added on to their lead in the top of the fourth inning when Trenton Smith smoked a two-run homer to make the score 4-0. That score held until the bottom of the fifth inning when the Birds got on the board with an RBI triple to cut the Vandals lead to 4-1. Vandalia broke the game open in the top of the seventh inning, erupting for 4 runs, highlighted by an RBI double from Chase Cearlock and an RBI single from Adam Buscher. Southwestern added two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, but the lead was too much to overcome, giving the Vandals the 8-3 win. The win improves Vandalia to 13-12 and 3-5 in SCC play. Vandalia will be back on the road on Thursday to take on Litchfield in a non-conference matchup.
