Seventh-seeded Altamont struggled to get their offense going in an 8-1 loss to #2 seed Cumberland in the quarterfinals of the National Trail Conference Tournament on Monday. Cumberland put up four runs in the first inning to jump ahead of the Lady Indians 4-0. Altamont’s lone hit of the game came from the top of the second inning’s first batter, Sophia Long, as she singled to right field. A fly out and a pair of strikeouts stranded Long at first base though to end the inning. Altamont continued to trail 4-0 until Cumberland was able to push three runs across the plate in the bottom of the fifth inning to push their lead over the Lady Indians to 7-0. The lead was further edged out to 8-0 in the bottom of the sixth innings. Altamont was able to break up the shutout in the top of the seventh inning as Long reached base as the right fielder misplayed her fly ball and Long ended up at second base. Kennedi Schultz would replace Long as the courtesy runner and she advanced to third base on a ground out by Adilyn Schnarre. Schultz then scored when Laila Hankins reached base on a dropped third strike as Altamont cut it to an 8-1 ballgame. That was it for the game’s scoring as Jocelyn Pearcy also reached base on a Cumberland error but both Hankins and Pearcy were stranded on base to end the game. Altamont now moves to the consolation bracket where they will face South Central at 6:15pm on Wednesday at Evergreen Park in Effingham.
