Vandals Can't Overcome Rough Fifth Inning in Loss to Wesclin


The Vandalia Vandals offense was held to two runs on four hits on Saturday, falling to the Wesclin Warriors 11-2. An RBI groundout from Andrew Casey gave the Vandals an early 1-0 lead, but the Warriors got the run back in the bottom of the first to tie the game at 1. Wesclin scored three runs in the second and one in the third innings to take a 5-1 lead. Vandalia got a run back in the top of the fourth inning when Casey scored on a Trenton Smith groundout, cutting the deficit to 5-2. The Warriors broke the game open in the bottom of the fifth inning, scoring 6 runs to extend their lead to 11-5. The Vandals were unable to crack the scoreboard in the final two innings of play, falling to the Warriors 11-2. The loss drops Vandalia to 12-12 on the season. The Vandals will be on the road Monday to take on Piasa Southwestern in SCC play.
