A six-run outburst in the bottom of the second inning gave Altamont an early lead that they held onto the whole game to pick up a 7-2 win over Altamont on Thursday. Both teams put two runners on base in the first inning but neither could get on the scoreboard as they started the second inning scoreless. Vandalia put a pair of runners on base in the top of the second but were stranded on base to end the half inning. Altamont then came up and loaded the bases with no outs on a pair of single from Laila Hankins and Haley Arend and a walk drawn by Becca Swank. Kennedi Schultz then drew a walk to bring one run in. Arend was able to score on a wild pitch and then Avery Fleeharty followed with a single to centerfield to drive in two runs and the lady Indians took a 4-0 lead. Two more singles from Ella Nelson and Sophia Long brought in a run apiece and Altamont pushed their lead to 6-0. In the top of the third, the Lady Vandals loaded the bases up with two outs and Walk raced home on a dropped third strike for their first run of the game. During the next at bat, Ollie Whitehead reached bae on an Altamont error and Vandalia cut the Altamont lead down to 6-2. Moving to the bottom of the fourth inning, Long hit a two-out triple and was lifted for courtesy runner Alyssa Ruholl who then scored on a wild pitch as the Lady Indians extended their lead to 7-2. That ended up being the final run of the game and the final three innings played out as scoreless innings for each team and Altamont closed out the 7-2 win. The Lady Indians move to 5-13 on the season and will return to play on Monday at home against Neoga. Vandalia drops to 3-12 on the season and will be in action today at home for a South Central Conference game against Litchfield.
