Vandalia wrestling is winding down the regular season with just a dual team match at Shelbyville this week to go before the IHSA 1A Regional this Saturday at Auburn. Heading into this final week before the postseason, the Illinois Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) rankings have seven Vandals currently ranked in the top 10 for their respective weight classes while another five Vandals are listed as Honorable Mention. Preston Waughtel at 126lbs and Dillon Hinton at 157lbs have stayed put at the top spot in their weight classes for several weeks and after sitting at #2 a couple weeks ago, Max Philpot at 132lbs also sits at #1 now. Several other wrestlers made moves up over the last couple weeks as Brody Matthews at 138lbs moved from Honorable Mention up to #9, Eli Mabry at 144lbs moved from #5 up to #3, Dade Kleinik at 150lbs moved from #10 up to #6 and Ross Miller at 190lbs moved from #6 up to #4 in the rankings. Aiden Evans at 120lbs and Dominic Swyers at 285lbs remained listed as Honorable Mention and are now joined by Kaiden Daugherty at 106lbs as Honorable Mention after previously being unlisted. A pair of injured Vandals continue to be listed as Honorable Mention as well in Keagan Turner at 144lbs and Cole Yarbrough at 165lbs.
As a team, the Vandals continue to sit in the #3 spot in the team rankings. Coal City and Lena-Winslow/Stockton stayed put at #1 and #2 ahead of the Vandals while Murphysboro, Dixon, Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley and Yorkville Christian stayed in the same spots as well in the fourth through seventh spots. The Vandals will compete in the Auburn Regional this coming Saturday with the top three finishers in each weight class advancing to the Individual Sectional that will be hosted by Vandalia on February 13 and 14. The team finishing first in points in the Regional will advance on to the Dual Team Sectional at Taylorville on February 5.
