Vandals Can't Slow Down Cumberland in VHT Championship Loss


Vandalia found themselves down early and despite a strong start to the second half, the Vandals couldn’t slow down the Cumberland offense enough and suffered a 62-45 loss to the Pirates in the Championship game of the Vandalia Holiday Tournament. The Vandals were held to just seven first quarter points as Cumberland jumped out to an 18-7 lead, The second quarter was more even as the Vandals put together more offense with Cumberland just outscoring Vandalia 14-13 and maintaining a 32-20 lead at halftime. A 5-2 run by the Vandals the featured a three=-pointer and a layup on back to back possessions by Qwentyn Stombaugh put the Vandals deficit down to single digits, trailing 34-25. Each time added on four more points apiece in the third as Cumberland stayed ahead 38-29. Scoring really ramped up in the final quarter but the Vandals couldn’t slow down the Cumberland offense and they were outscored 24-16 and they were handed the 62-45 loss. With their second place finish, the Vandals drop to 8-6 on the season and they will go on the road to start the 2026 portion of their schedule this weekend as they return to action on Saturday at North Clay.
