Vandals Beat Pana to Advance to VHT Championship Game for First Time Since 2019


Vandalia boys basketball will play for the Championship of their own Vandalia Holiday Tournament for the first time in six years after the Vandals got a 75-65 win over Pana in the crossover semifinal game on Monday night. The Vandals were able to get out to a first quarter lead that was as much as 20-12 before a late Pana basket ended the first quarter with Vandalia leading 20-14 with Carter Robbins dropping seven points in the quarter. The Panthers went on an 8-2 run to start the second quarter and tied the game up at 22-22. After a three-pointer from Andrew Casey and one from Pana had the game tied at 25-25, Qwentyn Stombaugh went on a 5-0 run himself to put the Vandals back on top as they led 30-25. A 9-6 scoring advantage the rest of the way had Vandalia up 39-31 at halftime. The Vandals outscored Pana 18-14 in the third quarter as Lucs Bowers put up six of those points and Vandalia lead the Panthers 57-45 heading into the fourth quarter. The Vandals were just outscored 20-18 in the fourth quarter with Brenton McCarty, Stombaugh, Robbins and Bowers each tallying four points in the frame as Vandalia closed out the 74-65 win and earned their spot in the title game where they will take on the tournament’s top seed in Cumberland tonight at 7:00pm. The Vandals finished second in 2018 and 2019 in their last two appearances in the Championship game and will be attempting to win their own tournament for the first time since 1981.
