St. Elmo-Brownstown showed a lot of fight in the second half, but came up just short to Hillsboro, 59-56, in the Third Place game of the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament on Saturday evening. The Eagles scored first to take a 2-0 lead but a three-pointer from the Hiltoppers gave them their first lead 3-2. SEB just edged Hillsboro 10-8 the rest of the quarter and regained the lead 12-11 by the end of the first. Hillsboro went on a 17-6 run to go up 28-18 in the second quarter but a 6-2 SEB run closed the game up to six points with the Eagles trailing 30-24 at halftime. For much of the third quarter, SEB would cut the Hillsboro lead down multiple times but the Hiltoppers responded right back and SEB continued to trail 47-42 to start the fourth quarter. The Eagles continued to battle and cut things down to a point but a pair of Hillsboro free throws pushed the lead back to three points. The Eagles were able to get a good look on a three from the right corner in the closing seconds, but it would be just off the mark and a defensive rebound by Hillsboro right before time expired ended the game as SEB suffered the tough 59-56 loss. SEB drops to the .500 mark on the season at 6-6 and they will take a couple weeks off now over the holidays before returning to action on Saturday, January 3 when they host Grayville for a 3:00pm game.
