Mulberry Grove and CHBC boys basketball both suffered losses in the Quarterfinals of the St. Elmo Holiday Tournament on its first night of play on Tuesday. In the tournament’s first game, Mulberry Grove was held to just four points in the first quarter and five in the second quarter as they found themselves trailing Hillsboro 30-9 at halftime. The Aces made some adjustments and outscored the Hiltoppers 18-16 in the third quarter but remained behind 46-27 to start the fourth quarter. Mulberry Grove was held to just five points in the fourth as they suffered the 60-32 loss. Mulberry Grove drops to 1-7 on the season and will move into the Consolation Bracket.
In the night’s second game, CHBC used an 8 for 9 showing at the free throw line to help them get to a 19-16 lead over Windsor/Stew-Stras by the end of the first quarter of their quarterfinal matchup. The Bobcats were outscored 16-14 in the second quarter but held on to a one point lead, 33-32, at halftime. WSS was able to go on a big run in the third quarter, outscoring CHBC 27-9 as the Bobcats trailed 59-42 entering the fourth quarter. The Bobcats were able to close the WSS lead down to nine points, but WSS used another late run to pull away and close out the 78-64 win over CHBC. The Bobcats drop to 4-4 on the season and will move into the Consolation bracket where CHBC and Mulberry Grove will meet in the first Consolation Semifinal on Thursday at 6:15pm and Hillsboro and WSS will meet in the first Championship Semifinal on Thursday at 7:45pm.
