Vandalia Splits Monday Doubleheader With Pana


The Vandals split a Monday doubleheader with Pana, dropping the first game 8-7, before bouncing back for 9-6 win in the second game. In the first game, the Vandals would get down 2-0 before putting their first run on the board in the bottom of the third to cut Pana’s lead to 2-1. After the Panthers put up three runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 5-1, the Vandals matched that in the bottom of the fifth with three runs of their own to pull back within a run, 5-4. A 2-run top of the sixth for Pana pushed their lead to 7-4 and again the Vandals would close the gap back up, this time tying the game up at 7-7 in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Pana would put one run across the plate for 8-7 lead in the opt of the eighth and Vandalia was unable to match that in the bottom of the inning to suffer the 8-7 loss.

In the second game, both teams came out strong offensively in the first inning, each putting up two runs for a 2-2 tie after an inning of play. Pana would pull ahead, 2-1, with a run in the bottom of the second, but the Vandals again matched them and tied the game back up at 3-3 in the top of the third. A run in the bottom of the fourth had the Panthers up 4-3, but Vandalia would push four runs across the plate in the top of the fifth to grab a 7-4 lead. A run in the sixth and one more would have the Vandals lead extended to 9-4 heading into the bottom of the seventh. Pana was able to score a pair of runs to cut the Vandalia lead to 9-6, but the Vandals would hold them at just the two runs to close out the win. Vandalia is now 9-12 on the season and will host Brownstown-St. Elmo on Thursday.
