Lady Vandals Fall in Regional Quarterfinal to End Season

Vandalia softball saw their season come to an end on Tuesday night as they suffered a 9-2 loss to Staunton in the quarterfinals of their own Vandalia 2A Regional. Despite hosting the regional, the Lady Vandals had to hit the road for their quarterfinal game due to the IHSA having quarterfinal games played at the higher seed. Staunton took an early lead putting up a run in the first inning and one more in the second inning and that 2-0 lead held until the fifth inning. The Bulldogs were able to tack on four more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to push their lead to 6-0. Vandalia had two outs in the top of the sixth inning when Katy Sefton and Elaina Hagy drew back to back walks to put runners at first and second. With Mady McCall at the plate, Sefton and Hagy advanced up to second and third bases on a wild pitch to put both in scoring position and McCall then hit a line drive double to right field to bring both runners in as Vandalia cut the Staunton lead down to 6-2. However, the Bulldogs got both runs back plus one in the bottom of the sixth inning as Vandalia’s deficit became seven runs with them trailing 9-2. Down to their last three outs, the Lady Vandals had no answer for the Staunton pitcher in the seventh inning going down on three straight strikeouts as Vandalia was handed the 9-2 loss. The Lady Vandals finish the season at 5-19.
