BSE Defeats Ramsey-Mulberry Grove in High-Scoring Affair


In a game that saw a combined 35 runs, 22 hits, and 16 errors, the Brownstown/St. Elmo Bombers used a big 7-run first inning to hang on for a 19-16 win over the Ramsey-Mulberry Grove Rams on Friday. The Bombers got on the board on a 3-RBI double from Zayden Gillespie to take a 3-0 lead. Calvin Voelker reached on an error, allowing Gillespie to score, extending the BSE lead to 4-0. The Bombers took advantage of two more errors from the Rams, extending their lead to 6-0, before Lucas Powell scored on a passed ball to cap off the 7-run first inning for the Bombers. BSE added on to their lead in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double from Logan Lach, a pair of RBI singles from Voelker, and Jayce Gillespie to make the lead 13-0. The Rams got on the board in the top of the third inning on an RBI single from Bladyn McCloskey to make the score 13-1, before an Everett Hicks single, Jackson Elam double, and Max Reiss ground out cut into the deficit 13-5. An RBI triple from Bentley Sanders and a passed ball gave the Bombers two of those runs back to make the score 13-5. The Rams continued to chip away at the deficit in the top of the fifth inning when Zion Morrison scored on a wild pitch, and Everett Hicks scored on a groundout, to make the score 15-7. An RBI groundout and an RBI single capped off the 4-run fifth for Ramsey-Mulberry Grove to cut the deficit to 15-9. BSE tacked on a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single from Powell, and Jayden Hughett reaching on an error, extending the lead to 17-9. The Rams would not go away quietly, taking advantage of a pair of BSE errors and getting a single from Braxton Moreland, to once again bring the game within 5, 17-12. The Bombers added a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth to push their lead to 19-12, but the Rams made things interesting in the seventh. Ramsey-Mulberry Grove loaded the bases to start the seventh. Carson Phillips scored on a wild pitch before Max Reiss singled to make the score 19-16. The Rams had the go-ahead run in scoring position, but were unable to bring him home, falling to the Bombers 19-16. The win improves BSE to 9-9 on the season. The Bombers will be on the road Monday to take on Christ Our Rock Lutheran. Ramsey-Mulberry Grove falls to 0-19 on the season. The Rams will be on the road Monday to take on Neoga.
