Vandalia softball made it 2-0 on the season against Litchfield as they picked up a 5-2 win over the Purple Panthers in non-conference action on the road on Thursday. Vandalia came out strong with a three-run first inning with a Mady McCall double bringing in Bella Walk and Elaina Hagy to score and then McCall herself scored when Katy Sefton reached base on a dropped third strike and an error on the Litchfield first baseman as the Lady Vandals went up 3-0. The second inning went by scoreless for both teams before Vandalia got on the board again in the top of the third inning after McCall doubled for her second in the game and then scored on a single to center field by K. Sefton to extend their lead to 4-0. Litchfield was able to get their first run across the plate in the bottom half of the inning and cut the Vandalia lead down to 4-1. The Lady Vandals quickly got that run back in the top of the fourth inning though as Mackenzie Willenborg singled to centerfield and then advanced to second base on a wild pitch and advanced to third base on a dropped third strike. With two outs and Willenborg at third, Bella Walk stepped to the plate and drove the ball into right field to bring the runner in and push the Lady Vandals lead back out to four runs making it a 5-1 game. That was it for the Vandalia scoring but Litchfield was able to score on mire run in the bottom of the fifth inning before the Lady Vandals closed out the 5-2 win. Vandalia moves to 5-15 on the season and they will jump back into South Central Conference action on Monday when they host Staunton.
