Vandals Get SCC Win Over Carlinville Behind 4-Hit Day From Cearlock


The Vandalia Vandals used a 9-run second inning, and a 4-hit day from Chase Cearlock to come away with a 15-5 win over the Carlinville Caviliers in South Central Conference play. After Carlinville got on the board with a 2-run homer in the top of the first inning, the Vandals got a run back in the bottom of the first when Andrew Casey reached on an error to score Kohnor Depew to make the score 2-1. Trenton Smith scored on a passed ball to tie the game at 2, and Ayden Carroll smoked a bases-loaded double to give the Vandals a 5-2 lead. An RBI single from Casey and a 2-RBI double from Drew Jones extended the Vandals lead to 8-2, and Adam Buscher reached on an error, allowing Cearlock to score, capping off a 9-run inning to give Vandalia a 10-2 lead. The Cavaliers chipped away at the deficit with a 3-run third inning, making the score 10-5. The Vandals added on to their lead in the bottom of the fourth inning when Cearlock singled to score Kobe Lux, and Buscher grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Smith, to make the Vandalia lead 12-5. The Vandals put the game away in the bottom of the fifth inning when Jack Lewis reached on an error to score Carroll, and Cearlock ripped a double to score Lewis and Casey, securing the 15-5 win. The win improves the Vandals to 12-11 on the season, and 2-5 in SCC play. The Vandals will be on the road Saturday for a doubleheader with Wesclin.
