SEB Comes Up Just Short in Extra Innings in NTC Game at North Clay

SEB softball made a trip to North Clay for the second time this month after the previous matchup was called midway through the game due to rain and in Wednesday’s continuation of the game, the Lady Eagles suffered a 9-8 loss in eight innings. The game picked up where it left off in the original meeting on April 2 in the bottom of the fourth inning with one out and North Clay runners at second and third and SEB trailing 5-2. North Clay was able to take advantage of a couple SEB errors to push their lead to 8-2 before the end of the inning. From there, the Lady Eagles took over the game’s scoring as they put up three runs in the top of the fifth inning. Dayana Haslett hit a leadoff single and Macey Sapp reached base on an error to put two runners on. Brooklyn Landrus singled to centerfield to bring in D. Haslett. Izzy Orr walked to put runners at the corners but Sapp was caught stealing home to leave just Orr on base at second. A groundout by Auni Wollin brought Orr in to score and SEB has the North Clay lead cut down to 8-5. In the top of the sixth inning, Mcay Claycomb hit a leadoff single and Kadence Speagle walked to put the first two batters on base but a double play cut that down to just Speagle at second base who scored on a single by D. Haslett. Sapp again followed D. Haslett with a single and Landrus hit a double to centerfield to score both pulling SEB even with North Clay 8-8. The game remined tied through the end of the seventh as the Lady Eagles were able to hold North Clay scoreless in the last two innings despite the Cardinals putting a runner on in each inning. With the game in the top of the eighth inning SEB got a one out single from Alivia Claycomb who was lifted for pinch runner Heaven Hardesty. D. Haslett grounded into a fielder’s choice as North Clay go the lead runner Hardesty out at second leaving Haslett at first base. Sapp singled to left field to put runners at first and second and advanced on to second and third on a passed ball to have both runners in scoring position. A groundout ended the SEB scoring threat though. In the bottom of the eighth, North Clay drew a leadoff walk and the runner moved up to second base on a passed ball before a single to centerfield allowed the runner to score from second base to give the Cardinals the 9-8 as the Lady Eagles suffered the heartbreaking on-run conference loss. SEB drops to 6-11 on the season and to 0-8 in NTC play. They will play Friday in one of the play-in games for the National Trail Conference Tournament taking on CHBC at 4:30pm at Beecher City Park.
