South Central Baseball Holds Off Carlyle to Secure 7-4 Win

South Central baseball grabbed an early lead and despite only scoring in two innings, held off a late Carlyle run and picked up a 7-4 win at home on Friday. Carlyle scored first with a run in the top half of the first inning but South Central countered in the bottom half with back to back RBI singles from Ryker Dodson and Luke Shumate giving the Cougars a 2-1 lead. With one out in the inning, another RBI single, this one from Sebastian Kruger, pushed the South Central lead to 3-1 and a steal of home by L. Shumate further extended the Cougar lead to 4-1. That lead held until the bottom of the fifth inning when with bases loaded, no outs and L. Shumate at the plate, Aidan Hoover scored on an error by the Carlyle catcher to extend the lead to 5-1 and then L. Shumate singled to bring in two more runs to push the lead out to 7-1. Carlyle put together a late rally in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs to cut South Central’s lead down to 7-4 but that was as close as they got as the Cougars were able to shut the Indians down and finish off the win. South Central is now 3-5 on the season and will be back at it today, playing at Casey-Westfield at 10:00am.
