South Central softball battled back in the fifth inning but couldn’t stop Newton late as they suffered a 7-3 loss on the road on Friday evening. The Lady Cougars were held scoreless for the first three innings and found themselves trailing 3-0 at the start of the fourth inning before putting their first run on the scoreboard on an RBI single from Perci Reid to cut the Newton lead down to 3-1. The Eagles added on one run in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 4-1 but South Central was able to pull within a run after Amelia Montes reached base on a single and then Kinlee Thompson hit a 2-run home run to center field to cut their deficit down to 4-3. Newton was able to respond in the bottom half of the inning though, putting up three runs as South Central trailed 7-3. The Lady Cougars were able to load the bases in the top of the sixth inning on a walk and a pair of singles, but a strikeout and a ground out ended the South Central scoring threat. They held the Eagles scoreless in the bottom of the sixth, but Newton returned the favor in the top of the seventh to close out the game and hand South Central the 7-3 loss. The Lady Cougars are now 7-4 on the season. They will be back home today to take on Breese Central at 10:00am.
