Vandalia picked up its third straight win while Ramsey-Mulberry Grove suffered its third straight loss as the Vandals beat the Rams 12-1 in five innings on Friday. After the Rams went out on three groundouts in the top of the first, an RBI groundout from Andrew Casey that scored Kohnor Depew put the Vandals up 1-0 in the bottom half of the inning. After Ramsey went scoreless in the top of the second inning, Vandalia added another run to their lead after Ayden Carroll singled, stole second base, stole third base and then scored on a balk by the pitcher to put Vandalia up 2-0. That lead was cut in half in the top of the third as Jackson Elam led the inning off for the Rams by reaching first on a dropped third strike/passed ball and then advanced to third base on a groundout. A single from Carson Phillips brought Elam in to score and cut the Vandalia lead down to 2-1. A three run inning for the Vandals in the bottom of the third behind an RBI single from Casey, an RBI double from Qwentyn Stombaugh and an RBI groundout from Drew Jones extended the Vandalia lead out to four runs, 5-1 to end the third inning. With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Ramsey got a baserunner aboard on a single from Bladyn McCloskey but he was stranded aboard as the Rams popped out and struck out to end the half inning. The Vandals put up their second straight three run inning in the bottom of the fourth scoring a run on a Ramsey error, another on a solo home run by Depew and one more on an RBI single by Chase Cearlock, pushing their lead to 8-1. The Rams threatened to score early in the top of the fifth inning as Elam led the inning off with a walk and Max Reiss followed that by drawing his own walk. A ground out from Gabriel Finley advanced the runners to second and third but a fielder’s choice nabbed Elam trying to score from third for the second out and Phiilips caught stealing second ended the half inning with the Rams unable to score. The Vandals put the game away in the bottom of the fifth, loading the bases with one run then coming in on a wild pitch followed by Depew hitting a three-run home run to center field to put Vandalia up 12-1 and trigger the run rule and give the Vandals the win. Vandalia moves to 3-1 on the season and will be back at it this morning for their home round robin taking on South Central at 11:00am and then Breese Mater Dei at 3:00pm. Ramsey-Mulberry Grove falls to 0-3 on the season and will at home on Monday to take on Pana.
