Vandals Baseball Nabs First Win of Season

Vandalia recorded ten hits and rode an early lead to a 5-0 shutout win over Hillsboro on Tuesday for their first victory of the season. Kohnor Depew and Jack Lewis led the game off with back to back singles to kickstart the Vandals offense and Andrew Casey grounded out to score Depew. A batter later, Chase Cearlock reached base on an error and Lewis scored on the play as Vandalia went up 2-0. Hillsboro was held scoreless in the bottom half of the inning and both teams went scoreless in the second. Depew picked up his second hit of the day to start the third inning and Casey got his first putting runners at the corners. An RBI single from Cearlock scored Depew and a sacrifice fly by Qwentyn Stombaugh scored Casey to double up the Vandals lead to 4-0. The Toppers and Vandals both went scoreless over the next three and a half innings before Ayden Carroll scored on an inside the park home run to start the seventh inning, edging the Vandalia lead to 5-0. The Vandals put runners on the corners on a Depew double and Lewis being hit by a pitch but a pop out and a fielder’s choice out ended the scoring threat and the half inning. Hillsboro was able to put a pair of base runners on in the bottom of the seventh inning but Vandalia got out of the inning unscathed and kept the shutout intact. The 5-0 win was credited to Jack Lewis as he went the distance on the mound giving up just one hit in the shutout and striking out seven. The Vandals are now 1-1 to start the season and they will be back at home on Thursday to take on Greenville.
