The Brownstown/St. Elmo Bombers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to come away with a 3-2 walk-off win over the Hillsboro Hilltoppers in their season opener on Friday night. After 5 and a half scoreless innings of play, the Bombers got on the board when Calvin Voelker reached on a two-out single, and later came around to score when Jayce Gillespie smoked a double to centerfield to give BSE a 1-0 lead. That lead would remain until the top of the seventh when Hillsboro would score two runs to take a 2-1 lead. BSE would waste no time tying the game, however, as Voelker would lead off the bottom of the seventh with a single and steal second base. Gillespie would hit a sacrifice fly, advancing Voelker to third, and would come home to score on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2. A pair of walks and a single would load the bases for Keelan Speagle, who would win the game for the Bombers on a single through the left side, giving BSE the 3-2 win. The win improves the Bombers to 1-0 on the season. BSE will return to play on Monday, going on the road to take on Lebanon.
