Greenville University softball finally got to kick their season off this past weekend after their first two games got canceled and they are off to a fast start going 4-0 in Branson. And leading the Lady Panthers driving in nine of their 33 runs scored over the weekend was South Central grad Brooklyn Garrett. Garrett went 7 for 12 over the four games for a .583 batting average, with 7 hits, 9 RBI and a pair of home runs. In the Lady Panthers season opener on Friday against University of St. Mary’s Kansas, Garrett got things started right from her first at bat for the season in the first inning, hitting a three-run home run and then went deep again in the third inning with another three-run shot to end the game with 6 RBI as Greenville picked up the 11-1 win in five innings. In their second game of the day Friday against Mission University, Garrett went 2 for 3 with a pair of RBI and the Panthers again got a big win, 8-1. On Saturday, Garrett went 1-3 in a 7-5 win over Graceland University and then went 2-3 with two runs scored and an RBI in their fourth and final game of the weekend. For her effort, Garrett has been named the SLIAC Hitter of the Week for Women’s Softball. The honor caps off the big debut week for Garrett who is in her first season at Greenville after playing her first two years of college ball at Olney Central College.
Also in the opening weekend, Vandalia grad and GU freshman Madison Lupton made her debut for the Lady Panthers as a pinch runner, scoring a run in the win against St. Mary’s Kansas and then made her first plate appearance in the Mission game popping out to shortstop before again pinch running and scoring a run in the Graceland game.
GU will get back into action this Friday with an afternoon doubleheader at Millikin University.
