Brownstown-St. Elmo is now in sole possession of first place in the National Trail Conference standings after beating St. Anthony 62-55 on Thursday night, staying undefeated in NTC play and handing the Lady Bulldogs their first conference loss. BSE committed a few quick uncharacteristic turnovers early in the game as St. Anthony was able to take a 5-0 lead before a Madi Miller free throw got the Bombers on the scoreboard. A 7-2 run by BSE sparked by a three knocked down by Danika Ramsey had the game tied up 7-7 with a little over two minutes remaining in the quarter and a 6-4 run to finish the frame put BSE up 13-11 heading into the second. A basket for basket battle in the first half of the second quarter had the game tied at 17-17 before a 7-2 St. Anthony run had BSE trailing 24-18. After a timeout, the Lady Bombers got in the groove again and a 9-2 run put them back on top, leading St. Anthony 27-26 at halftime. Scoring slowed on both sides of the ball in the third quarter but the Bombers were able to go on a 9-3 run to take a 37-29 lead with just under two minutes left in the quarter. That lead was closed up again by a St. Anthony 5-0 run to end the quarter and BSE’s advantage was back down to three points, 37-34. BSE and St. Anthony would get up and down the floor a bit to start the fourth quarter and the game was again tied up, 45-45, midway through the quarter before a drive and score from Dayana Haslett gave BSE the lead again at 47-45. After a 7-2 Bulldog run put the Lady Bombers down by three, 52-49, BSE again flipped the script but used free throws this time to help them regain the lead as they used four made shots from the line from Haslett and Presley Williams to take the lead again 53-52. A right wing three by Haslett at the one minute mark had the Bombers up 56-53 and after a botched possession, St. Anthony had to begin putting the Lady Bombers at the line to stop the clock. After two more made free throws by Haslett with 26.6 to go, a box out foul put St. Anthony’s Ruholl at the line and she made two of three to cut the BSE lead to 58-55 but the Bulldogs fouled on the inbound pass and Williams knocked down two more free throws to extend the lead to 60-55. Addie Sasse was the next Bomber fouled to stop the clock on the inbounds play and knocked down both her shots to push the lead to 62-55 and close out the win for BSE. The Lady Bombers are now 26-2 on the season and 8-0 in the NTC. They have two games remining in the regular season next week, going to Paris on Tuesday and to Windsor/Stew-Stras on Wednesday as they will wrap up NTC play. A win over WSS would complete an undefeated NTC regular season and give the Lady Bombers their first ever regular season NTC title.
