Lady Comets Come From Behind, Beat Father McGivney

After trailing for all but one minute of the game, the Greenville Lady Comets completed a late comeback and beat Father McGivney 34-32 on Tuesday night.

Greenville fell behind early, trailing 8-0 before finally getting on the board with 4:44 remaining in the first when Megan Halleman hit a shot from the left elbow. Rylee Pickett hit two 3-pointers to help close the deficit to 12-8 but the Comets still trailed 17-12 at the end of the 1st.

The Comets and the Griffins paced each other in the 2nd quarter, trading baskets, leaving the Comets still trailing by seven, 30-23 at halftime. Offense was tough to come by in the third with the teams combining for just 6 points and Father McGivney continuing to hold the lead, 32-27, at the end of the third quarter.

After a made free throw and another three from Pickett, Greenville had cut the lead to 32-31. Natalie Iberg forced a Griffin turnover and missed the layup on the breakaway, but Halleman got the rebound and was fouled on the put back basket to give Greenville its first lead of the game at 33-32 with 1:05 remaining. Halleman, fouled on the play, made the ensuing free throw to push the Comet lead to 34-32. That lead would hold as the Griffins had the ball with 9.3 seconds remaining and could not get a shot off as Greenville closed out the 34-32 win.

For Greenville:

Megan Halleman – 13 points, 10 blocks

Rylee Pickett – 13 points

Hannah Simpson – 5 points

Gwyn Mitchell – 2 points

Natalie Iberg – 1 point

Greenville is now 17-7 on the season and will take a week off before playing at Breese Central on January 28.
