Hinton Etching His Name in Vandals Wrestling Record Books

Vandalia senior wrestler Dillon Hinton may not be a real flashy guy on the mat, but he doesn’t have to be as his performances speak volumes and he steadily piles up the wins. And the numbers of wins he has racked up reached a historical point last week during the Vandals January 15 trip to Triad as Hinton picked up career victory #177 making him the All-Time Wins Leader for the Vandalia Wrestling program as he surpassed Jarek Wehrle . The record breaking win was an usual one for Hinton as he got the win by forfeit, but wins #178 and #179 later that night came by ways of Fall in 1:59 and 1:08.

Dillon passed 2021 VCHS graduate Jarek Wehrle for the top spot and when he did so, he was able to so something not many high school wrestlers get to do and broke the record with his dad and longtime coach also serving as one of his high school coaches.

Hinton also credited the many wrestlers who served as role models to him for him being at the point he is at today.

Since breaking the record, Hinton has continued to roll picking up six more wins across three duals as he now stands at 185 career wins. Hinton will have plenty more opportunities to keep tacking on to his win total as the next historical milestone would be to cross the 200-win threshold if opportunities allow. The Vandals have a quad this weekend in Beardstown and a dual next week at Shelbyville in regular season action and then they move into the postseason with Regionals and much more still left to go. Hinton is currently sitting strong at the #1 spot at 157lbs in the weekly IWCOA rankings and is a favorite to make a another strong showing at the Individual State Finals after placing fifth his freshman year at 132lbs, second his sophomore year at 138lbs and third his junior year at 150lbs.
