Altamont couldn’t hold off Dieterich in the second half of regulation, but the Lady Indians were strong in overtime holding the Maroons to just a free throw as they pulled out a 33-29 win in quarterfinal action at the National Trail Conference Girls Basketball Tournament on Monday afternoon. The first quarter was all Altamont as they held Dieterich scoreless although the Lady Indians were only able to put six points on the scoreboard with a basket each from Ella Nelson, Alyssa Ruholl and Justyce Higgs. Dieterich was able to score three points in the second quarter, all from Addison Miller, but Altamont did not allow a field goal as all of the Maroons points came from the free throw line while a pair of three-pointers from Nelson and baskets from Reagan Kuenstler and Ruholl put the Lady Indians up 16-3 at halftime. Dieterich began their comeback in the third quarter as Lena Goebel and Callie Faller each scored five points in the quarter and the Maroons outscored the Lady Indians 12-5 with four of the Altamont points coming from Kuenstler as the Lady Indians lead was cut down to 21-15 at the end of the third. A 13-7 Maroons run in the fourth quarter with eight points from Callie Faller had things tied up 28-28 to end regulation and forced the game into overtime. The Altamont defense stepped up in overtime as they held Dieterich to just one point on a free throw in the extra time while Nelson hit a three-pointer and Kuenstler added two points from the free throw line as Altamont outscored Dieterich in overtime, 5-1, for the four point win, 33-29. Altamont is now 10-9 on the season and they advance on to the first Championship semifinal game on Wednesday at 8:00pm against the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between Brownstown-St. Elmo and South Central. Dieterich is now 14-7 on the season and they drop into the Consolation bracket where they will play the loser of the BSE-South Central quarterfinal game.
