Third Quarter Run Pushes Dieterich Past Altamont

One quarter made the difference in a big National Trail Conference battle as Dieterich was a winner over Altamont, 60-50, on Friday night. As expected from the two teams, some big shots got the offenses going early with a trio of threes from the Indians while the Maroons capitalized on a couple put back baskets and it was Altamont who held the slim lead at the end of the first quarter, 13-12. Defense ramped up in the second quarter as the teams scored a combined 13 points with Dieterich just outscoring Altamont 7-6 to tie the score at 19-19 at halftime. Play was paused briefly in the quarter as Indians senior Kade Milleville was recognized for hitting his 1,000th career Varsity point on a basket with just a little under two minutes remaining in the half. After halftime, the Maroons gained some momentum in the third quarter as the Indians were held to just three baskets from the floor and went six for six from the free throw line but Dieterich poured in 23 points including 12 points from Ezra Cook in the quarter to go up 42-32. Altamont was able to cut the Dieterich lead down to five points 51-46 with a 1:24 to go in the game on a three-pointer from Cooper McManaway and cut it down another point on a Parker Bell free throw to make it 51-47 with 1:09 left. A basket and ensuing free throw by Bryce Bohnoff put Dieterich back up by seven, 54-47. With the Indians continuing to foul to stop the clock and the Maroons going five for six at the free throw line in the final 49.2 seconds, Dieterich was able to pull their lead back out to 10 points as the Maroons beat the Indians 60-50. Altamont drops to 8-7 on the season and 1-2 in the NTC. They will have a big test coming up tonight as they host Woodlawn, the current #1 ranked 1A team in the state, as part of Altamont’s Mega Day. JV boys will start at 2:00pm followed by the JV girls at approximately 3:30pm, Varsity girls at approximately 5:00pm and the Varsity boys wrapping up the day at 6:30pm. Dieterich improves to 11-3 on the season and 4-1 in the NTC. The Maroons will next play on Monday when they go on the road to face Patoka-Odin.
