Vandalia pulled off a late comeback to get an overtime win over Flora and then suffered a tough loss to Nokomis to go 1-1 on the second day of pool play at the Vandalia Holiday Tournament on Saturday. The Vandals fell behind in the first quarter to Flora and after trailing by eight at halftime, they closed the gap to three by the end of the third quarter. Vandalia trailed by six with about 1:15 to go in the game before a three-pointer from Andrew Casey cut the Flora lead to three and then Casey struck again from the top of the key with 5 seconds to go in the game to tie things up at 57-57. Flora got a look at a three at the buzzer but couldn’t connect as the game ended regulation tied up at 57-57. Lucas Bowers came up big for the Vandals in the overtime period, hitting a left corner three-pointer and went 2 for 2 at the free throw line as they outscored Flora 7-4 to get the overtime win, 64-61.
In their second game of the day and final game of pool play, the Vandals were held to single digit scoring in every quarter as they struggled to find any offensive flow in the game. After Nokomis got out to a 6-0 lead to start the game, the Vandals were able to go on a 6-4 run to end the quarter but trailed 10-6 at the end of the first. The second and third quarters saw Nokomis outscore Vandalia 9-8 in both quarters as the Vandals deficit was edged out to six points as they trailed 28-22 heading into the fourth quarter. Vandalia was held to seven points in the quarter while Nokomis tacked on 11 points to hand the Vandals the 39-29 loss. Vandalia finished pool play at 2-1 and via head-to-head tiebreaker over Greenville, the Vandals took the top spot in the pool and will play Pana at 7:00pm in the crossover round on Monday.
