Saturday afternoon’s girls basketball matchup between Altamont and Greenville was a close battle for 32 minutes but the Lady Indians came up just short falling 40-37 to the Lady Comets. One basket separated the two teams in the first quarter with both teams going 1 for 2 at the free throw line but Altamont was held to just six points from the floor, four from Avery Aldrich and another two from Kennedi Schultz, while Greenville scored eight from the floor to go with their free throw made to lead 9-7 at the end of the quarter. The Lady Indians were again held to just three field goals in the second quarter, but went 4 for 4 at the free throw line for 10 points with Alyssa Ruholl and Quincy Niermann each scoring four points apiece. However, the Comets again just outscored Altamont with 11 points in the quarter as the Lady Indians trailed 20-17 at halftime. As was the storyline for the first half, one basket again was the difference in scoring between the two teams in the third quarter as the Indians hit four times from the floor and once from the free throw line for nine points, six of them from Ruholl, while Greenville hit a pair of free throws and one of their four field goals was a three-pointer as the Lady Indians were outscored by a point, 10-9, in the quarter as their deficit edged out to five points, 31-26. Altamont was able to come out in the fourth quarter and outscore Greenville 11-9, but the game would come down to free throw shooting. The Lady Indians were put at the line six times in the quarter and with only hitting twice from the floor, Altamont needed a strong showing at the line. They hit on just 7 of 13 free throws and their offensive effort came up just short as they fell 40-37 in the game. The Lady Indians are now 4-5 on the season and they will return to National Trail Conference action on Monday, hitting the road to take on North Clay in Louisville.
