Ramsey Girls Overcome Slow Start to Grab Season Opening Win

Ramsey-Mulberry Grove girls basketball overcame a scoreless first quarter to rally for a 35-27 win over Sandoval at home on Monday night to get their season underway. Sandoval took a 5-0 lead after a quarter of play but the Lady Rams were sparked by an 11-8 run in the second quarter led by Anna Benhoff’s eight points coming off the bench and a key three-pointer from Lillabelle Kelley as Ramsey trailed just 13-11 at halftime after Sandoval broke an 11-11 tie with just a couple seconds left in the half. The Blackhawks opened the second half with a 5-0 run to go ahead 18-11 but Ramsey went on a run of their own reeling off a 7-0 run to tie the game at 18-18 before Daisy Allen scored with a little under a minute left for Ramsey to lead 20-18 at the end of the quarter. A three-pointer from Mia Waggoner and a rebound and score from Allen to start the fourth pushed the Rams lead to 25-18 before Sandoval closed it up to a 27-25 game. Ramsey again pushed things out with a 5-0 run and held the game to close out the 35-27 win. Benhoff, a freshman, led the Lady Rams in scoring with 20 points in her high school debut. The Lady Rams, now 1-0, will head out on the road for their second game, playing at Macon Meridian on Thursday.
