Greenville 34, Gillespie 24
In a key matchup when it comes to South Central Conference standings, the Greenville Lady Comets beat Gillespie 34-24 at home on Thursday night.
Greenville came out just a bit slow offensively and trailed 6-2 early before Danielle Brand hit a basket, was fouled and connected on the free throw to cut the Gillespie lead to 6-5. Natalie Iberg then hit a 3 to give the Comets their first lead of the game at 8-6 with just about 2 minutes to go in the period and Greenville ended the first quarter with a 10-6 advantage.
The Comets were outscored 10-9 in the second quarter but were able to hold on to a 19-16 lead at halftime. Offense was at a premium for both teams in the third quarter with Greenville holding the Miners to a single basket while only scoring 5 points of their own to edge their lead to 24-18 by the end of the quarter.
Iberg anchored the Greenville offense in the fourth quarter, putting in 5 points from the field and going 3-for-4 from the free throw line to score 8 of her 15 points in the period and help the Comets close out the 34-24 win.
The Lady Comets are now 16-7 overall on the season and stand at 5-1 in the South Central Conference.
