South Central Middle School Claims First State Championship in Program History

Fourth time is a charm for South Central Middle School softball as the Lady Falcons are the 1A State Champions after beating Central A&M, 3-0, in the title game of the IESA State Tournament on Saturday night. Dealing with weather delays amongst other adverse occurrences throughout the tournament, South Central again combined timely hitting with strong pitching and defensive plays to pick up the win. The title game was a scoreless battle through four and a half innings before the Lady Falcons opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a RBI single from Skylar Webster that would bring Lexy Garrett home for a 1-0 lead. An inning later, Claire Chasteen drew a leadoff walk and then scored from first base on a big line drive double to left field by Alexa Gila as South Central pulled ahead 2-0. Gile then advanced to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a wild pitch as the Lady Falcons went up 3-0. Central A&M put a runner on in the bottom of the seventh inning but the Vandals defense came up big and got two big outs to end the game and give South Central the 3-0 win and the title of State Champions. This was the fourth straight State Tournament appearance for the Lady Falcons who after two years of falling in the Elite Eight, finished fourth a year ago before going a perfect 3-0 to take the top spot this year. SCMS ends the season at 21-4. There will be a celebration planned for this coming week to celebrate the Lady Falcons and their historic season.
