Our Pro Wire Athletes of the Week for May 17 are the Altamont High School Girls Track 4×100 relay team, Vandalia High School Girls Track thrower Hannah Brown and Mulberry Grove softball senior pitcher Lily Johnson.
The Altamont girls 4×100 relay team of Gabby Weishaar, Ada Roberts, Katie Tedrick and Abby Weishaar turned in their fastest time of the season during Monday’s Ellis Invite, running a time of 51.55 seconds. That time beat a 25-year old school record in the event that was set back in 2000 with a time of 52.40 seconds.
Vandalia’s Brown is now the owner of both throws school records for the VCHS Girls Track Team as she had a best throw of 110’ 11” in the Discus on Wednesday at the Newton 1A Sectional. That throw broke the previous school record of 107’ 4” that was set in 2022 by Riely Ward. Brown also owns the Shot Put record beating her own school record set just last year, as she topped the mark twice this season.
The Lady Aces’ Johnson surpassed a major career milestone during last weekend’s Egyptian Illini Conference Softball Tournament last weekend as her first strikeout of the tournament was her 600th strikeout. She would have 10 strikeouts on the day to reach 609. Johnson recorded 28 more strikeouts across three games this week to now stand at 637 career strikeouts.
