South Central Hangs on For Win Over Olney


South Central Cougars baseball escaped a bases-loaded jam with the tying run at the plate to earn a 12-8 win over Olney on the road on Wednesday. The Cougars wasted no time getting on the board, loading the bases in the top of the first inning. Evan Hoover would work a walk, Maddox Robb singled and Zane Montes laid down a sacrifice bunt to cap off a 3-run first inning for South Central. Richland County got on the board in the second inning before South Central added to their lead in the top of the third when Eli Hiestand scored on a passed ball and a Callaway Smith single scored Montes and Luke Shumate to make it a 6-1 ballgame. A bases-loaded walk to Montes scored Chase Guerrettaz in the top of the fourth inning before Shumate reached on an error allowing Hoover to score and a Seth Jones groundout capped off the 3-run fourth for the Cougars to give them a 9-1 lead. The Tigers would add 3 runs in the fourth, and two more in the fifth to cut the deficit to 9-6, but South Central was able to add some insurance runs in the top of the sixth with an RBI single from Montes, a sacrifice fly from Jones, and Smith reaching on an error to make it a 12-6 ballgame. Olney tacked on one run in the sixth and one in the seventh, but Smith was able strand the bases loaded full of Tigers to secure the 12-8 win for the Cougars. South Central improves to 11-11 on the season. They will wrap up the regular season on Thursday when they travel to Dieterich.
