Reaching 1,000 career points in basketball is a common milestone to hear about each season, what isn’t as common is to hear that a player reaching the milestone is just a sophomore. That was the case on Thursday night as Brownstown-St. Elmo sophomore guard Dayana Haslett would get a steal and take the layup in for the basket at the 4:32 left mark in the third quarter to reach her 1,000th career point in just her 53rd high school game. Haslett says it has been her goal to reach the milestone, but credited her team and others for getting her to that point.
Another aspect that most players don’t get to share is having a sibling with them, and with twin sister Cami on the bench watching the moment unfold, Haslett says having her sister and sharing a hug right afterwards made the moment a lot of fun for her.
Haslett finished the game with 23 points as she now stands at 1,004 career points. With at least 12 games remaining in the regular season and the postseason still to come, Haslett has the opportunity to continue to add to that scoring total while also working with her teammates to chase down a conference title and a regional title over the next several weeks.
